The Beginning

  • Turning on and booting: Press the POWER button. The system performs a power-on self-test (POST). It then attempts to boot from a floppy disk or hard disk.
  • Energy saving features: The system enters a low power mode if left unattended. A flashing light on the purple button indicates this mode. Move the mouse or press a key to resume.
  • Turning off: Quit all applications and save work. Close Windows. Turn off peripherals. Press the POWER button to turn off the computer. Wait 5 seconds before turning it on again.
  • Cleaning and Transporting: Use a soft, damp cloth for cleaning. Avoid solvents and sprays. Handle with care, especially the hard disk, and back up data before moving. Use original packing materials for long-distance transport.

The System Drives

  • Floppy disk drive: Used for 1.44 Mbyte disks. Keep disks away from dust, sunlight, and magnetic fields. Insert disks with the metal window first, label side up.
  • CD-ROM drive: Used for multimedia data and audio CDs. Has a headphone jack. Insert CDs face up and press the EJECT button.
  • Hard disk drives: Store large amounts of data. Handle the computer with care, especially when powered on, to avoid damaging the drive surface.
