Getting Started

  • Attaching the Strap: Pass the strap through the camera's strap mount eyelet, then through the buckle.
  • Charging the Battery: Remove the protective cover, attach the battery to the charger, connect the power cord, and plug into an outlet. The charge lamp turns orange and the full-charge lamp turns green when complete.
  • Installing the Battery and Card: Open the battery/card compartment cover, insert the battery and then the memory card, and close the cover.
  • Turning on the Power: Set the Mode Dial to any mode other than OFF.

Basic Operation

  • Holding the Camera: Wrap your right hand around the grip, support the lens with your left hand, rest your index finger lightly on the shutter button, keep your arms and elbows against your body, and maintain a stable stance.
  • Shutter Button: Press halfway to activate autofocus and automatic exposure. Press completely to take the picture.
  • Quick Control: Press the button to access shooting function settings on the LCD monitor. Use the cross keys to select a function and the dial to change settings.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Cause/Solution
The battery does not recharge. Do not use any battery other than a genuine Canon Battery Pack LP-E10.
The battery charger's lamp blinks. If the battery charger has a problem, the protection circuit will stop the charging and the charge lamp will blink in orange. Unplug the charger, detach the battery, re-attach, and try again. If the problem persists, contact your dealer or Canon Service Center.
The camera does not operate even when the power is turned on. Make sure the battery is properly installed, the compartment cover is closed, and the battery is recharged. Press the <DISP> button.
The access lamp still lights or blinks even when the power is turned off. If an image is being recorded to the card, the access lamp will remain on/blink for a few seconds until recording is complete.
The battery becomes exhausted quickly. Use a fully-charged battery. Rechargeable battery performance degrades with use; purchase a new one if performance is low. Avoid operations that drain the battery faster (prolonged shutter button press, frequent AF, Image Stabilizer, LCD monitor use, Live View/movie shooting, Wi-Fi, Eye-Fi card communication).
The camera turns off by itself. Auto power off is likely active. Set [41: Auto power off] to [Disable]. If [Disable] is set, the LCD monitor will still turn off after 30 minutes of inactivity, but the camera power will remain on. Press <DISP> to turn the LCD monitor back on.
The lens cannot be attached. The camera cannot be used with EF-M lenses.
No images can be shot or recorded. Ensure the card is properly inserted and the write-protect switch is in the write/erase position. If the card is full, replace or delete unnecessary images. If the focus indicator blinks, refocus manually or automatically.
The card cannot be used. If a card error message is displayed, see page 38 or 294.
The image is out of focus. Ensure the lens focus mode switch is set to <AF>. Press the shutter button gently to prevent camera shake. If the lens has Image Stabilizer, set IS switch to <1>. In low light, use faster shutter speed, higher ISO, flash, or a tripod.
I cannot lock the focus and recompose the shot. Set AF operation to One-Shot AF. Focus lock is not possible in AI Servo AF or AI Focus AF modes when servo takes effect.
Horizontal stripes appear, or the exposure or color tone look strange. This can be caused by fluorescent, LED, or other lighting. Try a slow shutter speed.
The standard exposure cannot be obtained or the exposure is irregular. Using TS-E lenses with shift/tilt or an Extension Tube may result in irregular exposure.
The continuous shooting speed is slow. This can depend on lens type, shutter speed, aperture, subject conditions, brightness, etc.
The maximum burst during continuous shooting is lower. Custom Functions like High ISO speed noise reduction set to 'Strong', or white balance bracketing can reduce the maximum burst. Fine detail in subjects can also increase file size and reduce maximum burst.
ISO 100 cannot be set. If [C.Fn:6 Highlight tone priority] is set to [Enable], ISO 100 cannot be set.
ISO speed [H] (equivalent to ISO 12800) cannot be set. If [C.Fn:6 Highlight tone priority] is set to [Enable], [H] ISO speed cannot be selected even if [C.Fn:2 ISO expansion] is set to [1: On].
The Auto Lighting Optimizer cannot be set. If [C.Fn:6 Highlight tone priority] is set to [Enable], Auto Lighting Optimizer cannot be set.
Even though I set a decreased exposure compensation, the image comes out bright. Set [2: Auto Lighting Optimizer] to [Disable]. When other settings are used, the image may remain bright even with decreased exposure.
When I use the <Av> mode with flash, the shutter speed becomes slow. In low light, shutter speed automatically becomes slow (slow-sync shooting). To prevent this, set [3: Flash sync. speed in Av mode] to [1: 1/200-1/60sec. auto] or [2: 1/200sec. (fixed)].
The built-in flash does not fire. If the built-in flash is used too often in a short period, it may stop firing temporarily to protect the unit.
The external flash does not fire. Canon Speedlites other than EX-series will not fire. If [Flash control] > [Flash metering mode] is set to [TTL] in [External flash C.Fn setting], the flash will not fire.
Flash exposure compensation cannot be set for the external Speedlite. If flash exposure compensation is set on the external Speedlite, it cannot be set on the camera. It can be set on the camera when it is canceled on the Speedlite.
High-speed sync cannot be set in the <Av> mode. Set [3: Flash sync. speed in Av mode] to [0: Auto].
The camera makes a noise when it is shaken. A small noise from internal mechanisms is normal.
The shutter makes two shooting sounds during Live View shooting. If flash is used, the shutter makes two sounds each time you shoot.
During Live View shooting, a white <s> or red <E> icon is displayed. Red <E> means internal temperature is high and shooting will stop automatically. White <s> means image quality may deteriorate. Exit Live View and let the camera cool.
During movie shooting, a red E icon is displayed. Red <E> means internal temperature is high and movie shooting will stop automatically. Exit movie shooting and let the camera rest.
Movie shooting stops by itself. This can happen if the card's writing speed is slow, if a movie clip reaches 4 GB, or if the shooting length reaches 29 min. 59 sec. Use a faster card or check settings.
The ISO speed cannot be set for movie shooting. If [k1: Movie exposure] is set to [Auto], ISO speed is automatic. If [Manual], you can set it manually.
The exposure changes during movie shooting. Changes in shutter speed or aperture during movie shooting may be recorded. Test shooting is recommended.
The subject looks distorted during movie shooting. Fast panning or shooting moving subjects may cause distortion.
The image flickers or horizontal stripes appear during movie shooting. This can be caused by fluorescent/LED lighting or other light sources. Manual exposure with a slow shutter speed might help.
Wi-Fi cannot be set. If the camera is connected to another device with a cable, Wi-Fi cannot be set. Disconnect the cable first.
The menu screen shows fewer tabs and options. Certain tabs/options are not displayed in Basic Zone and movie shooting modes. Set the shooting mode to Creative Zone.
The file name's first character is an underscore (“_”). This occurs when Adobe RGB color space is set. Set color space to sRGB.
The file name starts with “MVI_”. This indicates it is a movie file.
The file numbering does not start from 0001. If the card contains recorded images, numbering may continue from previous images. Use a newly formatted card for numbering starting from 0001.
The shooting date and time displayed is incorrect. Check that the correct date, time, time zone, and daylight saving time are set.
The date and time are not in the picture. Date and time are recorded in image data as shooting information and can be imprinted during printing.
[###] is displayed. The number of recorded images exceeds the camera's display limit.
The LCD monitor does not display a clear image. Clean the LCD monitor with a soft cloth. Display may be slow or black in extreme temperatures, but will return to normal.
[Eye-Fi settings] does not appear. This menu appears only when an Eye-Fi card is inserted. If the card's write-protect switch is set to LOCK, connection status/Eye-Fi transmission cannot be checked.
Part of the image blinks in black. This is the highlight alert; overexposed areas blink. Adjust exposure compensation to a negative amount to capture more detail.
The image cannot be erased. The image is protected. Cancel protection first.
The movie cannot be played back. Movies edited with a computer cannot be played back on the camera. Ensure playback device compatibility with MOV files.
The movie sound cannot be played back. Sound cannot be played back on the camera as it lacks a speaker. Check sound on a TV set or computer.
Operation sound or mechanical sound can be heard when the movie is played back on a TV set or other device. These sounds are the camera's dial or lens operations recorded during movie shooting.
The movie has still moments. In autoexposure movie shooting, drastic exposure changes may cause momentary freezing. Shoot movies with manual exposure in such cases.
I cannot connect the camera to my TV set. An HDMI cable is required. Ensure the TV has an HDMI IN terminal. Check cable connection and camera/TV power. Wi-Fi must be disabled.
No picture on the TV set. Ensure the HDMI cable plug is fully inserted. Wi-Fi must be disabled to connect to a TV set with an HDMI cable.
My card reader does not recognize the card. Ensure correct card reader and computer OS compatibility. Connect camera to computer via interface cable to transfer images using EOS Utility.
I cannot resize the image. JPEG S3 and RAW images cannot be resized by the camera.
I cannot connect the camera to my printer. Wi-Fi must be disabled to connect via interface cable. Reconnect after disabling Wi-Fi.
There are fewer printing effects than listed in the instruction manual. Printing effects displayed vary by printer. The manual lists all available effects.
I cannot download images to a computer. Install EOS software. If Wi-Fi is enabled, disable it and reconnect the camera with an interface cable.
