  • Unpacking: Check that all items are included: digital camera, battery, charger, power cord, strap, USB cable, AV cable, CD-ROM, and Basic Reference.
  • Charging the Battery: Position the battery in the charger, plug it into a power outlet. The charge is complete when the [CHARGE] lamp turns off (approx. 90 minutes).
  • Loading the Battery: Open the battery cover, slide the battery in with the EXILIM logo facing downwards until it clicks. Close the cover.
  • Loading a Memory Card: Turn off the camera, open the battery cover, and insert the memory card into the slot with the front facing upwards until it clicks. Close the cover.
  • Formatting a Memory Card: Go to MENU > "Set Up" tab > "Format". Select "Format" and press [SET]. This is required for new cards.
  • Shooting a Snapshot: Press [O] (REC) to turn on the camera. Point at the subject and zoom if desired. Half-press the shutter button to focus. Fully press the shutter button to take the picture.
  • Turning the Camera On/Off: Press [ON/OFF] (Power) to turn on. Press [ON/OFF] (Power) again to turn off.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Possible Cause and Recommended Action
Power does not turn on. 1)Battery not loaded correctly. 2)Battery dead; charge it. If it dies soon after charging, replace it.
The camera suddenly powers down. 1)Auto Power Off may have activated. 2)Battery dead; charge it. 3)Camera protection due to high temperature; turn off and let it cool.
Power will not turn off. Nothing happens when a button is pressed. Remove and reload the battery.
Image is not recorded when the shutter button is pressed. 1)Camera is in PLAY mode; press [O] (REC). 2)Flash is charging; wait for completion. 3)Memory full; transfer or delete images.
Auto Focus does not focus properly 1)Lens dirty. 2)Subject not in center of focus frame. 3)Subject type incompatible with AF; use manual focus. 4)Camera movement; use Anti Shake or tripod. 5)Shutter button fully pressed without waiting for AF; half-press instead.
The subject is out of focus in the recorded image. Compose the image with the subject inside the focus frame.
The flash does not fire. 1)Flash Off mode selected; change mode. 2)Battery dead; charge it. 3)BEST SHOT scene with Flash Off selected; change flash mode or BEST SHOT scene.
Camera powers down during Self-timer countdown. Battery may be dead; charge it.
The monitor screen image is out of focus. 1)Manual Focus used without focusing. 2)Macro mode used for scenery/portraits; use AF. 3)Auto Focus or Infinity used for close-ups; use Macro.
There is a vertical line in the monitor screen image. CCD phenomenon (vertical smear) due to bright subject; does not indicate malfunction for snapshots, but does for movies.
There is digital noise in images. 1)High sensitivity in dark subjects; illuminate subject. 2)Shooting in dark with Flash Off; turn on flash or use lights. 3)Flash assist or dynamic range may increase noise; use light.
A recorded image was not saved. 1)Camera powered off before save completed; check battery indicator and charge. 2)Memory card removed before save completed.
Though available lighting is bright, the faces of people in the image are dark. Insufficient light on subjects; use Flash On for daylight synchro flash, or adjust EV shift.
Subjects are too dark when shooting images in a seashore or ski area. Sunlight reflection causes underexposure; use Flash On for daylight synchro flash, or adjust EV shift.
The focus frame does not appear on the monitor screen. If "Detect Smile" is selected, face recognition may default to "Normal". Change setting or enable "Auto Shutter" default setting.
Digital zoom (including HD zoom) does not work. The zoom bar indicates zoom only up to a zoom factor of 3.0. 1)Digital zoom setting off; turn on. 2)Date stamping on; turn off. 3)"White board, etc." BEST SHOT scene selected; choose another scene.
A family member's face is not detected correctly, even though the face has been pre-recorded. Faulty pre-recorded data or shooting angle/features; re-record face.
When shooting with Auto Shutter, the shutter does not trigger. Auto Shutter may not trigger in very bright/dark conditions or with fast subjects; change Trigger Sensitivity or press shutter button fully.
The image is out of focus during movie recording. 1)Subject outside focus range; shoot within range. 2)Lens dirty; clean it.
Playback
The color of the playback image is different from what appears on the monitor screen when shooting. Sunlight or other light shining directly into lens; position camera to avoid direct sunlight.
Images are not displayed. Cannot display non-DCF images from another camera.
Images cannot be edited (with Layout Print, resizing, trimming, keystone correction, color restoration, date/time editing, rotation). 1)Cannot edit MOTION PRINT snapshots, movies, or images from other cameras. 2)Keystone correction/color restoration may fail if no suitable shape/area is found.
Other
The wrong date and time are displayed. Date and time setting is off; set correctly.
The messages on the display are in the wrong language. Wrong display language selected; change setting.
Images cannot be transferred over a USB connection. 1)USB cable not securely connected. 2)Wrong USB protocol selected; select correct one. 3)Camera not turned on.
Language selection screen appears when the camera is turned on. 1)Initial settings not configured or battery was dead; check setup. 2)Problem with camera's memory data; perform reset operation to initialize setup.
