The Cisco Small Business Network Storage System (NSS) is a Network Attached Storage (NAS) unit designed to act as a native file server for various clients, including Windows, Apple Macintosh, UNIX, and Linux. It offers cross-platform file sharing, easy installation and administration, and data consolidation for better management and security. The NSS supports up to four physical disk drives and uses common file-based protocols like NFS, CIFS, and FTP. It also includes features like system status monitoring, log management, RAID configuration, volume management, end-user access control, share management, and system configuration options.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Solution
RAID Status Displays details for configured RAID arrays, including type (J=JBOD, 0,1,5,10), state (clean, degraded, rebuild, failed, stopped), and rebuild progress.
Volume Status Displays configured volumes and percentage of space used, including the RAID it's configured on and the volume name.
Cable Diagnostics Displays Ethernet cable status. "OK" if working. Reports "Short", "Open", or "Cable is not connected" if there's a problem. Test runs on initial display; can be rerun by scrolling.
Firmware Version/Update Date Displays firmware version and the date of the last upgrade.
Firmware Upgrade Displays the progress of a firmware upgrade. A diagnostic test runs automatically during the upgrade.
System Time/Date Displays the current 24-hour clock time and date (e.g., 21:45, Wed, Dec 12, 2008).
Shutdown Screen Displays the progress of an NSS shutdown.
Network Factory Defaults Restore During network defaults restore, the LCD displays network restoration and settings changes.
Repairing a Degraded Array For RAID 1, 5, or 10, replace the failed disk. For arrays without redundancy (e.g., JBOD), delete the array, replace the disk, and recreate the array. Use disks of the same model and at least the same capacity as the smallest disk in the array.
Firmware Attempt is Unsuccessful Check firmware compatibility, ensure it's a newer version, and verify correct installation order for virtualized setups. Re-attempt firmware upgrade after the system reboots.
Free Bound Virtualized Storage when the Master System Fails To resolve, unexport the bound storage system and then re-export it. The storage system will then be available to another system.
All CIFS Connections were Unexpectedly Ended Check if the hostname was changed on the Network Identification page. Change it back to the original hostname to resolve.
Hotplugging the Ethernet Link doesn't Reset IP or Link Rate Unplug the Ethernet link, wait 15 seconds, reconnect, wait 10 seconds. The link should re-establish.
Unable to Create a Share or Quota for a Volume The volume might be locked (especially if encrypted). Unlock the volume using its password to enable share and quota creation.
Cannot Access the NSS through FTP Ensure Enable FTP is selected in Shares > FTP Setup. Verify FTP protocol is selected for the share in Shares > Edit. Check for IP/MAC filters in Access > Network that might block FTP.
Cannot Rename a Folder through FTP Folder renaming is not a supported FTP standard. Use NFS or CIFS to rename folders.
Configuration Page Does not Appear in Internet Explorer This is a caching issue. Clear browser cache by going to Tools > Internet Options > General > Settings, selecting "Automatically" for checking stored pages, and setting disk space to 1 MB.
Handling an Unexpected (Unclean) Shutdown When the NSS powers up, an SNMP trap, a login message, or an email notification is sent. Review/edit settings manually, back up settings to USB, or restore to factory defaults and then restore from backup. The default admin password is "admin".
Boosting the Performance of NFS Transfers Increase read and write buffer sizes on the client at mount time. Example: mount -v -t nfs 192.168.1.1:/mnt/RAIDA/vol1/share1 /mnt/client -o nfsvers=3,rsize=32768,wsize=32768.
