Warranty Information

Refer to RMA failure codes for replacement information.

This document outlines troubleshooting procedures for the Cisco 8821 Wireless Phone. It covers issues related to microphone audio, power on (boot) failures, charging problems, and the 'MIC not installed' message. Procedures include using Audio Diagnostics, sidetone features, testing batteries and power sources, and verifying certificate status. Solutions range from simple checks to RMA replacement.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Issue Procedure Verification
Microphone Audio For firmware 11.0(5) and later: Use Audio Diagnostics (Settings > Admin settings > Diagnostics > Audio). Toggle audio path and speak into the microphone.
For firmware prior to 11.0(5): Enable headset sidetone (Settings > Phone settings > Sounds > Headset sidetone) to High. Ensure speakerphone is Off. Call or receive a call, answer, and mute the phone being tested. Tap near the microphone and listen for the sound in the earpiece.
If sound is heard, microphone is functional. If no sound, it's not functional and requires RMA with code Microphone Failure.
Phone Will Not Power On (Boot) Swap battery with a known good one. Test the suspect battery in another phone. Connect to AC power, USB, or desktop charger. Note any power indicators (white screen, boot logo, LED). Note firmware version. If phone powers on with a known good battery and the original battery doesn't work in another phone, the battery is faulty (use RMA code HW Fail - Power). If it powers on with a power source, open a service request with TAC. If metal charging plate is off, RMA (CSCve17188, use RMA code Field Notice Alert FN70135). If it fails to power on with a known good battery and power source, it's not functional and requires RMA (use RMA code HW Fail - Power).
Phone Will Not Charge Try charging another 8821 with the same power source. Swap power sources (AC adapter, USB port/cable). Confirm the metal charging plate is attached. Swap battery with a known good one and attempt charging. Note LED status. If another phone charges with the same power source but the non-charging phone won't charge even with a new battery, it needs RMA (use RMA code HW Fail - Power). If no phones charge with a specific power source but charge with another, the power source is faulty. If it charges only with a new battery, the battery is likely bad (use RMA code HW Fail - Power). If the metal charging plate is missing, it needs RMA (use RMA code Field Notice Alert FN70135).
MIC (Manufacturer Installed Certificate) Not Installed Check the bottom of the display for "MIC not installed" message during startup or persistently. Check status messages (Settings > Admin settings > Status > Status messages) for "MIC not installed". If the message is seen, the phone has lost its MIC. If MIC is required for functions like wireless authentication (EAP-TLS), the phone needs RMA. Functions other than wireless authentication can work with a Locally Installed Certificate (LSC).
