1. POWER (Power Switch): Turns the unit on and off. The power indicator (PMA-720 only) and tuner function indicator light up when the unit is on. A built-in muting circuit eliminates noise during operation.

2. INPUT SELECTOR: Selects the program source (PHONO, CD, TUNER, AUX-1, AUX-2).

3. VOLUME: Adjusts the overall volume level.

4. MONITOR/COPY: Used for tape deck recording or copying tapes.

5. PHONES: Jack for connecting headphones.

6. SPEAKERS: Selects between speaker system A, speaker system B, or both.

7. BASS: Controls the low-frequency characteristics of the sound.

8. TONE (PMA-720 only): Enables or disables tone control.

9. TREBLE: Controls the high-frequency characteristics of the sound.

10. SOURCE SELECTOR: Offers options like SUBSONIC (for record players), NORMAL (standard source selection), and CD DIRECT (bypasses input selector for direct CD input).

11. LOUDNESS: Enhances low and high frequencies at low volumes for a more natural sound.

12. PHONO: Selects the cartridge type (MC or MM).

13. BALANCE: Adjusts the balance between the left and right channels.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Cause Solution
No sound from speakers Speaker system not connected correctly. Check speaker connections.
Distortion or abnormal sound Speaker impedance is too low or too high. Ensure speakers meet impedance requirements (4-16 ohms).
Protective circuit activated (output cut off) Speaker jacks not completely connected or output short circuit. Turn power off, check speaker connections, then turn power on again.
