  1. Connect the local port: Connect VGA monitor, USB keyboard, and mouse cables to the KVM s4 switch.
  2. Connect a CAT 5 adapter cable to the KVM s4 switch: Connect one end of a CAT 5 cable (4-pair, up to 150 ft/45 m) to a numbered port on the switch rear, and the other end to the CAT 5 adapter cable's RJ-45 connector.
  3. Connect a target device to a CAT 5 adapter cable: Connect the CAT 5 adapter cable to the appropriate port on the target device's rear. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all target devices.
  4. Connect network users: Connect a customer-supplied CAT 5 cable from the Ethernet network to the LAN port on the switch rear. Network users will access the switch through this port.
  5. Connect to an external modem (optional): Connect a CAT 5 cable to the MODEM port on the switch, and the other end to the CAT 5 to DB-9 adapter, which connects to the modem's appropriate rear port.
  6. Connect a supported PDU to the switch (optional): Connect the RJ-45 cable from the PDU to the PDU1 port on the switch. Use the RJ-45 adapter to connect the other end to the PDU. Connect target device power cords to the PDU and plug the PDU into an AC outlet. Repeat for PDU2 if needed.
  7. Connect local virtual media or smart cards (optional): Connect virtual media devices or smart card readers to USB ports. For virtual media or smart card sessions, the target device must be connected via a compatible adapter cable.
  8. Turn on target devices and power the switch: Turn on target devices. Connect switch power cords to the rear power socket and to an AC outlet. Use the second cord for redundant power.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Solution
No power to the switch Check that the power cords are securely connected to the switch and the AC outlet. Ensure the AC outlet is functioning.
Cannot connect to target devices Verify that all CAT 5 cables are securely connected at both ends. Ensure the correct ports are used. Check that the target devices are powered on.
Network users cannot access the switch Ensure the CAT 5 cable from the network is securely connected to the switch's LAN port. Verify network connectivity to the switch.
