The Hasselblad 500ELX is a motorized single-lens reflex camera with interchangeable lens, magazine, viewfinder, and focusing screen. Here's a summary of its basic operation:

  • Power On: Insert the battery (PLUS END FIRST) and fuse into the camera's battery compartment. Close the cover and turn the locking button until the slot is horizontal.
  • Open Focusing Hood: Lift the lid firmly at the rear edge and swing it up to the vertical position. The built-in magnifier can be flipped up for viewing.
  • Attach Lens: Ensure the camera is fully cocked. Align the red index on the lens bayonet with the corresponding index on the camera body. Insert the lens and rotate it clockwise until it locks.
  • Load Magazine: Remove the roll holder from the magazine. Place an empty spool, then a roll of film, ensuring correct orientation. Pull paper backing, insert into take-up spool, and turn the splined knob to advance. Re-insert roll holder, lock it, then rotate the film winder crank clockwise until it stops and "1" appears in the frame counter.
  • Focusing: Rotate the rubberized focusing ring until the viewfinder image appears sharp. The distance can be read from the focusing ring's distance scale.
  • Set Exposure: Adjust the shutter speed using the selector ring (closest to the front of the lens) and the aperture using the aperture ring. These can be cross-coupled by depressing the cross-coupling button.
  • Release Shutter: Press the main release button to take a picture. The camera automatically winds on and recocks after exposure.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Solution
Camera not operating after battery/fuse insertion. Check that the electrical circuit is complete by firing the camera via the main release button.
Battery exhausted; camera stops mid-cycle. Move the time exposure, lock/charge lever to the 'L' position and connect the recharge unit.
Flash emitted was not sufficient for correct exposure ("No ready signal"). Open the aperture further, reduce distance to the subject, or change to a faster film.
