Getting Started

Camera Controls: Familiarize yourself with the camera's top and back controls, including the Power light, ON/OFF button, Shutter button, Delete button, Flash button, Mode selector, Zoom lever, and navigation buttons (Up, Down, Left, Right, OK, Back).

Initial Setup:

  • Install batteries.
  • Turn on the camera.
  • Choose the language and set the region.
  • Set the date and time accurately.
  • Install and format an optional memory card if desired.
  • Install the HP Photosmart Software on your computer.

Taking Pictures

  1. Set the mode dial to Picture Capture.
  2. Frame your subject in the Image Display.
  3. Press the Shutter button halfway down to focus and set exposure.
  4. Press the Shutter button fully to take the picture.

Recording Video Clips

  1. Set the mode dial to Video Record.
  2. Frame your subject.
  3. Press the Shutter button halfway down to focus and set exposure.
  4. Press the Shutter button fully to begin recording.
  5. Press the Shutter button again to stop recording.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Solution
My image is blurry.
  • Use Focus Lock.
  • Use a tripod or improve lighting.
  • Use Steady Photo mode.
  • Set flash to Auto Flash or Flash On and shooting mode to Action.
My image is too bright.
  • Turn the flash off.
  • Move back and use zoom.
My image is too dark.
  • Wait for better lighting, use flash, or add indirect lighting.
  • If subject is out of flash range, turn off flash, use tripod or steady hold.
My image is grainy.
  • Add indirect lighting, use flash, or wait for better lighting.
  • Steady Photo mode may increase graininess.
  • Avoid zooming too far with digital zoom.
  • Keep camera cool; avoid hot locations.
Images are missing on my camera. Check internal memory and transfer to memory card if necessary.
Memory cards Format cards, ensure compatibility (SDHC for 4GB+), check for defects.
Slow "Delete All" Format the memory card instead of deleting all images.
Camera stuck / no display Slide mode dial or press a button; reset the camera.
Sluggish response in Playback Transfer tagged images to computer; check storage tips.
Video recording terminates abruptly Use a faster memory card (High Performance, Pro, Ultra, High Speed).
Video recording won't play back Transfer to computer, reformat memory card.
Camera gets warm This is normal; turn off if unusual. Store in cool place.
Camera stalls connecting to computer Check memory card size, USB connection, try different port, reset camera, contact HP Support.
Cannot transfer images Install software, configure Mac settings, or set camera as Disk Drive.
Error transferring images Reset camera, restart transfer process.
HP Photosmart Software not starting on Mac Configure camera preferences in System Preferences.
HP Photosmart Software slow to transfer Transfer frequently, format card after transfer.
Camera shuts down unexpectedly Reset camera, recharge batteries, use AC power, or replace batteries.
