Warranty Information

The instrument is warranted against defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of shipment.

Basic Operation

The HP 6034A is an autoranging, programmable DC power supply designed for laboratory use. It provides continuous output voltage and current indication on front-panel meters. The unit can operate as a constant voltage (CV) or constant current (CC) source, automatically transitioning between modes based on load resistance and settings.

Key features include:

  • Autoranging for at least 200W output power across a wide range of voltage and current combinations.
  • HP-IB programmability for remote control of output voltage, current, and other parameters.
  • Overvoltage protection (OVP) to safeguard the connected load.
  • Front-panel controls for local adjustment of voltage, current, and OVP trip level.
  • Status indicators for HP-IB communication, power supply status (OVP, OTP, UNREGULATED, DISABLED), and operating mode (CV/CC).
  • Self-test function upon turn-on and user-selectable test modes.

Operation involves connecting the load, setting desired voltage and current (locally or remotely), and turning the unit on. The MODE indicators display the active operating mode.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Number Controls/Indicators Description Paragraph #
1 HP-IB Status Indicators RMT indicates that power supply is under remote control. 3-73, 3-79
In test mode, HP-IB status indicators flash on and off to indicate which test, if any, the unit has failed (see Paragraph 3.14).
LSN indicates that power supply is addressed to listen. 3-85
TLK indicates that power supply is addressed to talk. 3-85
SRQ indicates that power supply is requesting service from controller. 3-87, 3-90
2 Power Supply Status Indicators OVP indicates that overvoltage protection circuit has tripped and is latched. 3-25, 3-81
In test mode, power supply status indicators flash on and off to indicate the particular fault within a failed test (see Paragraph 3-14).
OTP indicates that overtemperature protection circuit has been activated. 3-81
UNREGULATED indicates that neither the CV or CC loops are regulating the power supply output (either from an overrange condition or low ac input voltage). 3-11, 3-81
DISABLED indicates that output power circuits have been turned off via HP-IB. 3 124
INVALID REQUEST indicates either a syntax error or a soft limit error in an instruction was received via HP-IB. 3-81
3 MODE Indicators Unit initializes as a voltage source, mode (CV or CC) depends on voltage and current settings and load resistance.
CV (NORMAL) indicates that power supply has been programmed as a voltage source and is regulating its output at a constant voltage. 3-7, 3-15
CC (LIMIT) indicates that power supply has been programmed as a voltage source but is regulating its output at a constant current. 3-7, 3-15
CC (NORMAL) indicates that power supply has been programmed as a current source and is regulating its output at a constant current. 3-7
CV (LIMIT) indicates that power supply has been programmed as a current source but is regulating its output at a constant voltage. 3-7
