Getting Started:

  • Power: Charge the battery pack and connect the AC adapter or use the battery pack for power.
  • Grip Adjustment: Adjust the grip for comfortable operation.
  • Viewfinder Adjustment: Adjust the viewfinder for a clear image.
  • Loading/Unloading Cassette: Open the holder, insert/remove tape, and close the holder.
  • Recording Mode Setting: Select SP or LP recording mode.
  • Loading Memory Card (GR-DVL817 only): Insert memory card into the camcorder.
  • Picture Quality Mode Setting (GR-DVL817 only): Select FINE or STANDARD picture quality.

Video Recording:

  • Basic Recording: Perform initial setup, set power to 'A' or 'M', and press the Recording Start/Stop button.
  • Journalistic Shooting: Adjust angles and LCD monitor position for dramatic shots.
  • Self-Recording: Tilt LCD monitor forward to record yourself.
  • Operation Mode: Select Manual (M) or Full Auto (A) using the Power Switch.
  • Zooming: Use the Power Zoom Lever to zoom in ('T') or out ('W').
  • Video Light: Turn on/off or set to Auto for dim lighting.
  • Time Code: Recorded on tape for scene confirmation; essential for editing.

Video Playback:

  • Normal Playback: Load tape, set switch to VIDEO/PLAY, and press Play/Pause.
  • Still Playback: Press Play/Pause to pause.
  • Shuttle Search: Use fast-forward/rewind buttons for high-speed search.
  • Frame-By-Frame Playback: Engage Still Playback and use MENU/BRIGHT wheel.

Troubleshooting and error codes

IndicationsFunction
Displays the battery remaining power. Remaining power level: high. Remaining power level: exhausted. As the battery power comes close to nil, the battery indicator blinks. When the battery power is exhausted, power turns off automatically.
Appears when no tape is loaded.
CHECK TAPE'S ERASE PROTECTION TAB Appears when the erase protection tab is set to “SAVE” while the Power Switch is set to "A" or "M" and the VIDEO/DSC Switch (GR-DVL817 only) is set to "VIDEO”.

HEAD CLEANING REQUIRED USE CLEANING CASSETTE
Appears if dirt is detected on the heads during recording. Use an optional cleaning cassette.
CONDENSATION OPERATION PAUSED PLEASE WAIT Appears if condensation occurs. When this indication is displayed, wait more than 1 hour until condensation disappears.
TAPE! Appears if a tape is not loaded when the Recording Start/Stop Button or SNAPSHOT Button is pressed while the Power Switch is set to “A” or “M” and the VIDEO/DSC Switch (GR-DVL817 only) is set to “VIDEO”.
TAPE END Appears when the tape ends during recording or playback.
DIFFERENT FORMATTED TAPE Appears if a tape in another format is loaded.
SET DATE/TIME! • Appears when the date/time is not set. • Appears when the built-in clock battery runs out and the previously set date/time is erased. Consult your nearest JVC dealer for replacement.
LENS CAP Appears for 5 seconds after power is turned on if the lens cap is attached.
A. DUB ERROR! <CANNOT DUB ON A LP RECORDED TAPE> <CANNOT DUB ON A 16BIT RECORDING> <CHECK TAPE'S ERASE PROTECTION TAB> Appears if Audio Dubbing is attempted on a blank portion of a tape. • Appears if Audio Dubbing is attempted on a tape recorded in the LP mode. • Appears if Audio Dubbing is attempted on a tape recorded in 16-bit audio. • Appears if A. DUB (◕) on the remote control is pressed when the erase protection tab is set to “SAVE”.
