| How can I prevent eggs from splashing? | When baking or poaching eggs in the microwave, the yolk may sometimes splash as steam builds up inside. To prevent the egg from splashing, before cooking, pierce the yolk with a toothpick. Never cook eggs in their shells. |
| Why is it so important to let things rest after cooking? | When cooking with a microwave, many foods build up enough internal heat to continue cooking even after being removed from the oven. Microwave cooking works from the outside in. The resting time allows the food to finish cooking properly inside without the outside becoming overcooked. |
| Why does my oven sometimes take longer to cook food than the recipe states? | First, check that the oven is set exactly as the recipe prescribed. Cooking times and heat settings are suggestions to prevent food from overcooking, but variations in food weight, size, shape, and starting temperature will affect how long it takes to cook precisely, just as with a conventional oven. Use your common sense and the recipe to check if the food has been cooked properly. |
| Why does condensation form on the inside of the oven door? | Condensation is completely normal, especially when cooking foods with high moisture content such as potatoes. |
| Does microwave energy escape through the door window? | No, the door has a special metal screen with holes that allow you to see inside the oven but do not let microwave energy escape. |
| Steam comes out through the door edge and ventilation holes. Can microwave energy also escape? | No, the door and ventilation holes are specifically designed to release steam during cooking, but keep microwave energy inside. The gaps are not large enough for microwave energy to escape. |
| What happens if the oven is turned on while empty? | The microwave oven will be damaged. Do not turn on the microwave while it is empty. It is a good idea to place a cup of water in the oven in case someone accidentally turns it on. |
| Why doesn't the oven light come on? | Open the door. If the light does not come on, the bulb is likely blown. Call for a qualified repair person – do not attempt to change the bulb yourself. |
| There are sparks inside when I use the microwave. Will this not damage it? | Yes. Ensure that you do not use metal utensils and that the container does not have a metal part. Metal should not be used other than aluminum foil in the microwave. |
| It lights up through the ventilation holes and the door. Does this mean microwave energy is escaping? | No, it is completely normal for light to be seen. There is no need to worry. |
| Why is there noise on the TV and radio when I use the microwave? | Microwave ovens use radio waves, similar to those received by TV and radio. You can reduce this interference by moving the microwave further away from the TV or radio. |
