Starting the Engine

  1. Ensure the spark plug wire is securely connected.
  2. For PLM4120N: With a cool engine, press primer bulb 3-5 times, set choke to "" position. For warm engine, set choke to "↔" position.
  3. For PLM4620N2: Set choke between "A" and "" positions for cool/warm start, and "" position for operation.
  4. Hold the stop control handle firmly.
  5. Pull the starter handle rapidly, then return slowly after engine starts.
  6. Release the stop control handle to stop the engine.

Operating the Mower

  • Hold the stop control handle tightly with both hands during operation.
  • Release the handle to stop the engine and blade.
  • Ensure the engine brake lever returns to its initial position for automatic stopping.

Mowing Tips

  • Clear lawn of debris.
  • Do not cut wet grass.
  • Cut no more than 1/3 of the grass length per pass.
  • Operate at full throttle for best results.
  • Clean the underside of the deck after each use.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Spark plug gap is incorrect.Set gap between electrodes at 0.7 to 0.8 mm.
Spark plug is defective.Install new, correctly gapped plug: refer to ENGINE OWNER'S MANUAL.
Engine difficult to start or loses power.Carburetor is flooded with fuel.Remove air cleaner element and pull starter rope continuously until carburetor clears itself and install air cleaner element.
Faulty ignition module.Contact Makita authorised service centre.
Dirt, water, or stale fuel tank.Drain fuel and clean tank. Fill tank with clean, fresh fuel.
Vent hole in fuel tank cap is plugged.Clean or replace fuel tank cap.
Engine operates erratically.Air cleaner element is duty.Clean air cleaner element.
Spark plug is detective.Install new, correctly gapped plug: refer to ENGINE OWNER'S MANUAL.
Spark plug gap is incorrect.Set gap between electrodes at 0.7 to 0.8 mm.
Engine idles poorly.Air cleaner element is dirty.Clean air cleaner element: refer to ENGINE OWNER'S MANUAL.
Air slots in engine shroud are blocked.Remove debris from slots.
Engine skips at high speed.Cooling fins and air passages under engine blower housing are blocked.Remove debris from cooling fins and air passages.
Gap between electrodes of spark plug is too close.Set gap between electrodes at 0.7 to 0.8 mm.
Engine overheats.Cooling air flow is restricted.Remover any debris from slots in shroud, blower housing, air passages.
Mower vibrates abnormally.Incorrect spark plug.Install original spark plug and cooling fins on engine.
Cutting assembly is loose.Tighten blade.
Cutting assembly is unbalanced.Balance blade.
