Machine Operation Summary

First Use/After Long Period of Non-Use:

  1. Rinse and clean water tank and lid. Fill with fresh water.
  2. Ensure capsule container and cup support are in place.
  3. Plug in machine.
  4. Turn machine ON by pushing the button.
  5. Wait for steady GREEN light, indicating machine is ready.

Coffee Preparation:

  1. Fill water tank with fresh drinking water.
  2. Turn machine ON.
  3. Wait for steady GREEN light.
  4. Place cup under coffee outlet (remove cup support for Alto).
  5. Open machine head by pushing lever up.
  6. Insert capsule, dome side down.
  7. Close machine head by pushing lever down.
  8. The machine will automatically read the capsule and brew coffee.
  9. Push button to stop early if desired.

Energy Saving:

  • Machine turns OFF automatically after 9 minutes of non-use.
  • Can be turned OFF manually by closing head and holding lever down for 3 seconds.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Possible Cause & Solution
No light on the button. Machine is OFF; press button to turn ON. Check plug, voltage, fuse. Ensure button light is GREEN. Check water tank is full and correctly placed. Ensure new capsule is inserted correctly, machine head is closed, and press button. Descale if necessary.
No coffee. Open machine head to eject capsule. Clean as per cleaning section. Pre-warm cup. Descale if necessary. Check water tank placement. Clean as per cleaning section. Descale if necessary. Check water tank placement. Empty and clean capsule container. If problem persists, call Nespresso Club.
Coffee not hot enough. Pre-warm cup with hot tap water. Descale if necessary.
Unusual coffee flow. Check water tank placement. Open machine head to eject capsule. Clean as per cleaning section. Descale if necessary. Check water tank placement. Empty and clean cup support. If problem persists, call Nespresso Club.
Water filtration. Open machine head. Remove power cord from mains. Clean metal contacts carefully. Be careful of sharp edges. If problem persists, call Nespresso Club.
Capsule not ejected properly. Open machine head to eject capsule. Clean as per cleaning section. Empty and clean cup support. Descale if necessary. If problem persists, call Nespresso Club.
Water filtration (coffee). Open machine head and allow machine to eject capsule. Clean as per cleaning section. Empty and clean cup support. Descale if necessary. If problem persists, call Nespresso Club.
Machine turns OFF. For energy saving, machine auto-shuts off after 9 minutes. See 'Energy Saving Concept'. Start cleaning procedure. See 'Cleaning'.
Coffee grounds in cup. Check machine head is correctly closed. For Alto, Coffee, or Espresso, ensure new capsule is inserted correctly and machine head is closed. Press button. Machine is heating up; it takes up to 1 minute to be ready.
Green lights rotating, machine not functioning. Machine is heating up (takes up to 1 minute).
Steady green light and machine not functioning. Check machine head is correctly closed. For Alto, Coffee, or Espresso, ensure new capsule is inserted correctly and machine head is closed. Press button.
Steady green light while machine is operating. Indicates machine is functioning correctly.
Solid half GREEN and half RED light. Descaling is required. Machine can be used a few more times before descaling is mandatory. See 'Descaling'.
Solid RED light flashing continuously and machine stops. Remove any obstacle, empty capsule container if necessary, then open or close machine head as needed. Fill water tank and press button to start.
Machine not working, RED light flashes twice and turns to GREEN light. Open machine head to eject capsule. Ensure new capsule is inserted correctly and machine head is closed. Press button.
Machine not working, RED light flashes 3 times every 2 seconds and turns to solid RED light. Push lever up, wait for machine head to stop, remove obstacles, empty capsule container if necessary, then push lever down to close machine head. Turn OFF machine, unplug, wait 15 minutes for it to cool down. Plug in and turn ON. Machine is heating up and light will turn solid GREEN when ready. If problem persists, call Nespresso Club.
Solid RED light and machine not working. Turn OFF machine, unplug, wait 15 minutes for it to cool down. Plug in and turn ON. Machine is heating up and light will turn solid GREEN when ready. If problem persists, call Nespresso Club.
RED light starts to turn off. Machine is cooling down and light will turn solid GREEN when ready.
RED light turns on twice and then flashes ORANGE. Special function is executing. Open machine head, allow machine to eject capsule. Select reset function by pressing button. If in 'Emptying the system' mode, remove water tank. Special Functions Menu: Select desired function by pressing lever down.
RED light turns on twice and then solid ORANGE. Special Functions Menu: Select desired function by pressing lever down.
Continuous flashing ORANGE light. Special function is executing. See relevant section (Descaling/Cleaning/Emptying the system/Reset to factory settings).
