Basic Camera Positioning

  1. Hold the unit with both hands.
  2. Put your hand through the grip belt.
  3. Use the Recording button icon for convenience when holding the unit at waist level. Ensure stable footing and avoid collisions. Record with sunlight behind you outdoors. Keep arms near body and legs spread for balance. Do not cover microphones.

Basic Motion Picture Recording

  • Hold the unit steady.
  • Move the unit slowly and steadily when recording.
  • Use zoom for distant subjects, but avoid overuse to maintain enjoyable viewing.

Recording Yourself

  • Rotate the LCD monitor towards the lens side. The image will appear horizontally flipped.
  • If a warning symbol appears, return the LCD to normal position to check warnings.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Check points
Scenes cannot be deleted.
  • Release the protect setting. (→ 110)
  • Any scenes/still pictures where the thumbnails are displayed cannot be deleted. If the scenes/still pictures are unnecessary, format the media to erase the data. (→ 38)
  • Please be aware that if a media is formatted then all the data recorded on the media is erased and cannot be recovered. Back up important data on a PC, disc etc.
Even when this unit is correctly connected to a TV, images or sounds are not output.
  • Please read the operating instructions of your TV and select the channel that matches the input used for the connection.
  • Change the [TV ASPECT] setting to match the aspect ratio of the TV. (114)
  • The audio during playback mode is not output from this unit when connected to a TV. Sound levels cannot be adjusted using this unit, so adjust the sound on the TV.
The images are squeezed horizontally.
  • Check if the HDMI micro cable is connected correctly.
  • Insert the HDMI micro cable all the way in.
Even when this unit is connected to the TV by the HDMI micro cable, images or sounds are not output.
  • Check that the device is compatible with the capacity or type of SD card (SD Memory Card/SDHC Memory Card/SDXC Memory Card) that you inserted. Refer to the operating instructions of the device for details.
If the SD card is inserted in another device, it is not recognized.
  • When connected to other devices using only the battery, reconnect using the AC adaptor.
When connected by the USB cable, this unit is not detected by the other devices.
  • (Setting on this unit)
    Connect with a HDMI micro cable (supplied). (→ 113)
    Touch MENU, then touch [SETUP] → [VIERA Link] → [ON]. (→116)
    Turn the unit off and then back on again.
  • (Setting on other devices)
    If the TV input does not switch automatically, switch the input using the TV remote control.
    Check the VIERA Link setting on the connected device.
    Please refer to the operating instructions of the connected device.
VIERA Link does not work.
  • Other equipment might have not recognized the SD card. Unplug the USB cable once, and reconnect it.
Cannot copy scenes on the SD card by connecting to other equipment with the USB cable.
  • With a PC
  • When connected by the USB cable, this unit is not detected by the PC.
    • After re-inserting the SD card into the unit, reconnect the supplied USB cable.
    • Select another USB terminal on the PC.
    • Check the operating environment. (→ 171, 178)
    • Connect the supplied USB cable again after restarting the PC and turning on this unit again.
  • When the USB cable is disconnected, an error message will appear on the PC.
    • To disconnect the USB cable safely, select the 🖥 icon in task tray displayed on the PC, and then select the model number of this unit to disconnect the USB cable.
  • Cannot see the PDF operating instructions for HD Writer AE 5.2.
    • You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later or Adobe Reader 7.0 or later to read the PDF operating instructions for HD Writer AE 5.2.
About the Wi-Fi function
Cannot connect to wireless access point or smartphone.
  • Read page 150 if the Wi-Fi connection cannot be established.
Cannot operate from smartphone using [Link to Cell].
  • Install the smartphone app “Image App” on your smartphone. (→ 141)
When I look at the recording screen with the smartphone, mosaic-like noise appears on the screen and the image movement does not look smooth.
  • When this unit is set to any of the following recording formats or recording modes, mosaic-like noise may appear on the screen and the image movement may not look smooth. (Recorded images will not be affected.)
    – Recording mode [1080/60p] for the recording format [AVCHD]
    – Recording mode [1080/50M] or [1080/28M] for the recording format [MP4/iFrame]
Cannot use [DLNA Play].
  • Make sure the television is compatible with DLNA. Read the instructions for the television you are using.
  • Make sure the wireless access point and this device are properly connected.
  • Approach the wireless access point and reconnect.
  • If a connection cannot be made between this device and a DLNA-compatible device, try to reconnect and make sure they connect properly.
I have forgotten the password for the Wi-Fi.
  • Perform [Reset Wi-Fi Settings] from the Setup menu (→ 37). This will set the Wi-Fi setting to the condition at the time of purchase, and you will be able to use the Wi-Fi setting menu. When performing [Reset Wi-Fi Settings], all Wi-Fi settings including registered wireless access points will be deleted.
