Getting Started:

  • Charge the battery fully before first use.
  • Attach the shoulder strap and lens hood.
  • Insert an SD card.
  • Turn the unit on by pressing the lock release button and setting the power switch to ON.
  • Select Recording Mode or Playback Mode using the THUMBNAIL button.

Recording:

  • Adjust focus, white balance, iris, and shutter speed as needed.
  • Use the zoom lever to adjust zoom.
  • Press the recording start/stop button to begin or end recording.

Playback:

  • Use the THUMBNAIL button to enter Playback Mode.
  • Navigate and play back recorded scenes using the controls.

Other Functions:

  • Connect to a PC via USB for data transfer.
  • Use Wi-Fi for remote operation or transferring data.
  • Refer to troubleshooting for common issues.

Troubleshooting and error codes

ProblemCheck points
The lens, the viewfinder or LCD monitor fog up.This is due to condensation. It is not a breakdown. Please refer to page 2.
A clicking sound is heard when the unit is shaken.This is the sound of the lens moving and is not a defect. This sound will no longer be heard when the unit is turned on and switch to Recording Mode.
Object seems to be warped.Object seems to be warped slightly when the object moves across the image very fast, but this is because the unit is using MOS for the image sensor. This is not a malfunction.
This unit cannot be turned on.Charge the battery again to ensure it is sufficiently charged. (→14)
This unit does not stay on long enough.In cold places, the battery using time becomes shorter.
• The battery has a limited life. If the operating time is still too short even after the battery is fully charged, the battery has worn out and needs to be replaced.
This unit cannot be operated though it is turned on.Remove the battery or AC adaptor, wait about 1 minute and then reconnect the battery or AC adaptor. Then about 1 minute later, turn on the unit again. (Conducting the above operation while the media is being accessed may damage the data on the media.)
• If normal operation is still not restored, detach the power connected, and consult the dealer who you purchased this unit from.
This unit does not operate normally.The unit has automatically detected an error. Restart the unit by turning off and on.
• The unit will be turned off in about 1 minute if the unit is not turned off and on.
• Repair is needed if it is repeatedly displayed even if it is restarted. Detach the power connected, and consult the dealer who you purchased this unit from. Do not attempt to repair the unit by yourself.
Function display (Remaining Display, Counter Display, etc.) is not displayed.[CARD & BATTERY] or [OTHER DISPLAY] of the [DISP SETUP] is [OFF]. (→ 155)
• Press the COUNTER button to switch the counter display. (→57)
The unit arbitrarily stops recording.Use an SD card that can be used for motion picture recording. (→20)
• The recordable time may have shortened due to the deterioration of the data writing speed or repeated recording and deletion. Using the unit, format the SD card. (→ 30)
Auto Focus function does not work.Switch to Intelligent Auto Mode.
If you are trying to record a scene which is hard to bring into focus in Auto Focus Mode, use the Manual Focus Mode to adjust the focus. (→ 35, 39)
Colour or brightness of the image changes, or you may see horizontal bars in the image.• Colour or brightness of the image may change, or you may see horizontal bars in the image when the object is recorded under fluorescent light, mercury light or sodium light, etc., but this is not a malfunction.
• Record images in Intelligent Auto Mode or adjust the shutter speed to 1/50, 1/60 or 1/100.
• Adjust the Synchro Scan shutter speed. (→ 52)
The LCD monitor flickers indoors.
Scenes/still pictures cannot be played back.Any scenes/still pictures where the thumbnails are displayed as ! cannot be played back.
Scenes/still pictures cannot be deleted.Release the protect setting. (88)
• Any scenes/still pictures where the thumbnails are displayed as cannot be deleted. If the scenes/still pictures are unnecessary, format the media to erase the data. (→ 30)
Please be aware that if a media is formatted then all the data recorded on the media is erased and cannot be recovered. Back up important data on a PC etc.
Although this unit is correctly connected to a TV, images cannot be seen.Please read the operating instructions of your TV and select the channel that matches the input used for the connection.
• Change the setting of the unit depending on the cable connecting to the TV. (→ 91)
The images are squeezed horizontally.Check if the HDMI cable is connected correctly.
Insert the HDMI cable all the way in.
Even when this unit is connected to the TV by the HDMI cable, images or sounds are not output.Check that the device is compatible with the capacity or type of SD card (SDHC Memory Card/SDXC Memory Card) that you inserted. Refer to the operating instructions of the device for details.
• To play back scenes in the recording format option [4K/50p 150M], you need a TV that supports 4K/50p. (→ 89, 92)
If the SD card is inserted in another device, it is not recognised.
When connected by the USB cable, this unit is not detected by the other devices.When connected to other devices using only the battery, reconnect using the AC adaptor.
When connected by the USB cable, this unit is not detected by the PC.After re-inserting the SD card into the unit, reconnect the supplied USB cable.
Select another USB terminal on the PC.
Check the operating environment. (→ 94, 99)
• Connect the supplied USB cable again after restarting the PC and turning on this unit again.
When the USB cable is disconnected, an error message will appear on the PC.To disconnect the USB cable safely, double-click the icon in the task tray and follow the instructions on the screen.
Cannot see the PDF operating instructions for HD Writer XE 2.0.You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or later or Adobe Reader 7.0 or later to read the PDF operating instructions for HD Writer XE 2.0.
Cannot connect to wireless access point or smartphone.Read page 127 if the Wi-Fi connection cannot be established.
Cannot operate from smartphone using remote operation.Install the smartphone app “Image App” on your smartphone. (→ 119)
I have forgotten the password for the Wi-Fi.Perform [Reset Wi-Fi Settings] from the Setup menu (→ 131). This will set the Wi-Fi setting to the condition at the time of purchase, and you will be able to use the Wi-Fi setting menu. When performing [Reset Wi-Fi Settings], all Wi-Fi settings including registered wireless access points will be deleted.
If the SD card is inserted in this unit, it is not recognised.If the SD card is formatted on a PC, it may not be recognised by this unit. Use this unit to format SD cards. (→ 30)
If AVCHD scenes do not change smoothly when played back on another deviceThe images may be still for several seconds at the joins between the scenes if the following operations are performed when multiple scenes have been continuously played back using another unit.
• Just how smoothly the scenes will be played back depends on the playback unit. Depending on the unit used, the images may stop moving and become still for a moment even when none of the following conditions are applicable.
• A continuous recording of motion picture data that exceeds 4 GB may momentarily stop at every 4 GB of data when played back with another device.
• It may not play back smoothly when the editing of scenes was done with the HD Writer XE 2.0, but it will play back smoothly if you set the seamless settings in the HD Writer XE 2.0. Refer to the operating instructions for the HD Writer XE 2.0.
