Turning Power On

Your computer is powered with either the rechargeable battery or AC power. Before using the computer for the first time:

  1. Remove the battery protection sheet on the bottom of the computer.
  2. Plug the AC adapter cable into the left side of the computer.
  3. Plug the AC power cord into the AC adapter.
  4. Plug the AC power cord into a wall outlet.
  5. Slide the display lock latch and raise the cover to a comfortable viewing position.
  6. Press the power switch located above the Esc and F1 keys.

The computer will start up and Windows 98 setup will guide you through the process.

Setting up Windows 98

The setup involves entering your name, registering your computer, accepting the license agreement, and completing configuration. Follow the on-screen instructions. This process takes approximately 5-10 minutes. Do not turn off the computer during setup.

Shutting Down the System

To turn off the computer:

  1. From the Start menu, select Shut Down, then Shut down and click OK.
  2. Alternatively, you can configure the power button to shut down the system via the Power Management settings.

Caution: Do not turn off or reset the computer while disk indicators are lit. Close the screen cover when the computer is off. Wait 5 seconds before turning it back on.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Trouble when Starting

Why doesn't the power switch function? - Make sure the AC power cable is correctly connected to a live wall outlet.
- If using batteries, they may be discharged. Connect to a wall outlet.
Why doesn't Windows start? - Check if the external floppy disk drive contains a non-system disk. Remove it and press any key.
- If booting from floppy, ensure the disk is fully inserted.
- Check BootSequence in the Setup Utility to ensure Diskette Drive is first.
Why do I get a non-system disk or disk error message? - Remove non-bootable disk from floppy drive.
- Insert a bootable disk and check hard disk status.
- Verify Diskette A: and Hard Disk Type settings in Setup Utility.
Why do I get the message Operating system not found? - Insert boot up disk into external floppy drive; check hard disk condition.
- Check hard disk status and size in Setup Utility; set Hard Disk Type to Auto.
Trouble with Display

Why is the screen blank? - Press any key to check power management.
- Check power indicator.
- Ensure battery is charged or connected.
- Select LCD screen using Fn+F5.
- Adjust brightness with Fn+F7.
- Check backlight with Fn+F11.
- If unresolved, power off for >6 seconds, then on.
- If still unresolved, use reset switch (page 2-3), wait 5 seconds, then turn on.
Why does the external monitor display nothing? - Confirm monitor is on and connected correctly.
- Select external monitor using Fn+F5.
Why is the image on an external monitor display distorted? - Confirm monitor connection.
- Keep CRT away from strong magnetic fields (TVs, radios).
- Do not share outlets with TVs/radios.
- Lower screen area value in Display Properties than CRT resolution.
