The player can be operated using the front panel buttons or the supplied remote commander.

Basic playback functions:

  • Power On/Off: Press the /I button.
  • \n
  • Disc Tray: Press the Open/Close button to open or close the disc tray.
  • \n
  • Playback: Press the ▷ button to start playback.
  • \n
  • Pause/Stop: Press the /II button to pause and the button to stop playback.
  • \n
  • Volume Control: Use the VOL +/- buttons on the remote to adjust the volume.
  • \n
  • Disc Removal: In case of power failure, open the dust cover and insert a tapered driver to access a hole for disc removal (see Fig. 1 on page 4).

  • Setup: Use the Setup Display to adjust various settings like language, screen, audio, and custom settings. Access the Setup Display by pressing the DISPLAY button and navigating through the menus.

  • Control Menu: Press the DISPLAY button during playback to access the Control Menu for various functions like repeat, shuffle, program play, and sound adjustments.

Troubleshooting and error codes

  • MP3 audio track not playable (page 50).
  • DATA CD not recorded in compatible format or with correct extension.
  • MP3 audio track data is not MPEG1 Audio Layer 3 or in MP3PRO format.
  • MODE(MP3, JPEG) setting incorrect.
  • Insert disc with playback side down.
  • Re-insert the disc correctly.
  • Check disc compatibility and region code.
  • Allow player to acclimatize to room temperature.
  • Finalize the disc correctly.
  • Refer to page 50 for MP3 playback.
  • Ensure disc is formatted correctly.
  • Check MP3 format and audio layers.
  • Select the correct MODE setting.
The MP3 audio track cannot be played.
  • DATA CD not recorded in a compatible MP3 format (ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2 or Joliet).
  • MP3 audio track does not have the ".MP3" extension.
  • Data is not formatted as MP3 or is not MPEG1 Audio Layer 3.
  • MP3PRO format is not supported.
  • MODE(MP3, JPEG) setting is for IMAGE (JPEG) only.
  • Ensure correct MP3 format and extension.
  • Verify MP3 data and audio layers.
  • Select AUTO or AUDIO(MP3) mode.
The JPEG image file cannot be played.
  • DATA CD not recorded in a compatible JPEG format (ISO9660 Level 1 or Joliet).
  • Extension is not ".JPG" or ".JPEG".
  • Image size exceeds limits (3072x2048 in Normal mode, 3,300,000 dots in Progressive JPEG).
  • MODE(MP3, JPEG) setting is for AUDIO (MP3) only.
  • Ensure correct JPEG format and extension.
  • Check image dimensions.
  • Select AUTO or IMAGE(JPEG) mode.
The MP3 audio tracks and JPEG image files start playing simultaneously. MODE(MP3, JPEG) setting is set to AUTO. Select AUDIO(MP3) or IMAGE(JPEG) mode if you want to play them separately.
Album names, MP3 tracks, or JPEG files are not displayed correctly. Player only displays numbers and alphabet characters. Other characters appear as '*'. Ensure file and album names use alphanumeric characters.
The disc does not start playing from the beginning.
  • Program Play, Shuffle Play, Repeat Play, or A-B Repeat Play is selected.
  • Resume play has taken effect.
  • Disc has an auto playback function.
  • AUTO PLAY in CUSTOM SETUP is set to ON.
  • Cancel these playback modes.
  • Press to restart from the beginning.
  • Disc may have auto-start feature.
  • Set AUTO PLAY to OFF in CUSTOM SETUP.
Playback stops automatically. Disc has an auto pause signal. Disc may have an auto pause function.
Cannot perform some functions (Stop, Search, Slow-motion Play, Repeat Play, Shuffle Play, or Program Play). Disc software may restrict certain functions. Refer to the disc's operating manual.
"Data error" appears on the TV screen when playing a DATA CD.
  • MP3 audio track/JPEG image file is corrupted.
  • Data is not MPEG1 Audio Layer 3.
  • JPEG image file format does not conform to DCF.
  • JPEG image file has an extension but is not in JPEG format.
  • Use a different disc.
  • Ensure correct MP3/JPEG format.
  • Check JPEG file format compliance.
  • Verify JPEG file format.
The disc tray does not open and "LOCKED" appears on the front panel display. Child Lock is set (page 28). Turn off Child Lock.
The disc tray does not open and "TRAY LOCKED" appears on the front panel display. Child Lock is set. Contact Sony dealer or authorized service facility.
5 numbers or letters are displayed on the screen and front panel display. Self-diagnosis function activated. Check the self-diagnosis table on page 73.
