Using Your Zanussi Cooker

Ceramic Hob

  • Turn hob controls clockwise for full area, or anticlockwise for centre section.
  • Inner section is economical for small saucepans.
  • For single hotplates, turn control knob in either direction to vary heat. Higher numbers mean hotter settings.
  • Ceraglow hotplates react quickly and have a rapid red glow.
  • Use good quality saucepans with flat bases and close-fitting lids, approximately the size of the cooking area.
  • Ensure new saucepans are scrubbed clean.
  • Avoid traditional round-bottomed woks.
  • Heated areas may switch ON/OFF to prevent overheating.
  • Avoid excessive switching by using suitable saucepans.

Deep Fat Frying

  • Fill pan one-third full of oil.
  • DO NOT cover the pan.
  • DO NOT leave unattended.
  • In case of fire, switch off electricity, cover pan. DO NOT use water. Leave to cool.
  • DO NOT store fat/oil in the frying pan on the hob.
  • Coat food with flour, egg, breadcrumbs or batter.
  • Use a thermometer to test oil temperature (190°C/375°F).
  • Lower food gently, do not overfill.
  • Drain cooked food on absorbent paper.
  • Double fry chips for best results.

Grilling

  • Use full or centre section of the grill for economy.
  • Turn temperature control to the right for hottest setting.
  • For lower settings, align 110°C or 150°C with the off dot.
  • Cooling fan operates with grill.
  • Grill door must be left open.
  • Safety device cuts out grill if door is closed.
  • Top oven cannot be operated when grill is in use.
  • Handle attaches by sliding to the left and over the central bump.
  • Remove handle by sliding to the right and lifting.
  • Place grill pan on shelf centrally beneath grill.
  • Withdraw grill pan to check food or remove shelf.
  • Dry food thoroughly before grilling.
  • Brush lean meats/fish with oil or butter.
  • Adjust grill height and pan runner position.
  • Place accompaniments under the grid.
  • Use straight shelf in position 1 for toasting bread.
  • Preheat grill on full setting.

Top Oven

  • Smaller oven, heated top and bottom.
  • Good for fruit cakes, flans, quiches.
  • Ideal as a warming compartment (80°-100°C).
  • Turn function selector to top oven.
  • Turn temperature control to required setting.
  • Cooling fan operates immediately.
  • Grill cannot be operated with top oven.
  • Indicator neon glows until desired temperature is reached, then cycles ON/OFF.
  • Shelf fits with straight rods uppermost, towards the back.

Fan Oven

  • For larger roasts and casseroles.
  • Can cook on a flat shelf on the top oven base if sufficient room for air circulation.
  • Stand dishes on a baking tray on shelf to prevent spillage.
  • Ensure at least 2.5cm (1") between top of food and element.
  • Place tins/trays centrally on shelf below element.
  • Consider lower temperatures and shorter cooking times.
  • Leave door open for shortest time.

Automatic Timer

  • Set time of day first.
  • Use minute minder for audible reminders.
  • Set oven timer to switch ON and OFF automatically by setting Cooking Time and Stop Time.
  • Set oven timer to switch OFF only by setting Cooking Time.
  • Return cooker to manual by turning temperature control to OFF and pressing the () button.
  • Programmes can be cancelled by returning cooking hours to zero.
  • Ensure food is covered if not removed immediately after cooking.

Cleaning

  • Allow cooling fan to cool cooker before switching off electricity.
  • Do not use cleaners with bleach or abrasives.
  • Clean ceramic hob daily with cream cleaner, e.g. Hob Brite.
  • Use razor blade for stubborn burnt-on soilage.
  • For discolourations, use Bar-Keepers Friend or a Cream of Tartar paste.
  • Clean outside of cooker with soft cloth and hot soapy water.
  • Control knobs and handles only with hot soapy water.
  • Grill pan handle cannot be washed in dishwasher; other parts can.
  • Meat tin, grill pan, grid, and shelves can be cleaned with a soap-impregnated steel wool pad.
  • Stayclean enamel surfaces should not be cleaned manually. Run oven at 220°C weekly.
  • Do not use oven sprays or abrasives on Stayclean surfaces.
  • Clean door glass with hot soapy water; avoid household detergents, bleaches, etc.
  • Outer door panel is removable for cleaning.
  • Replace inner glass panels with soft cloth and hot water.
  • Replace oven light bulb with a 300°C, 25W small Edison Screw bulb. Disconnect power first.

Troubleshooting

  • Check wiring, main fuse, timer instructions if cooker does not work.
  • Check timer settings if grill/hotplates work but oven does not.
  • Check recommended temperatures, adjust if necessary, if oven temperature is too high/low.
  • Check grill operation instructions, cooling fan, if grill/hotplates work but grill does not.
  • Check cooker is level if oven is not cooking evenly or door won't stay open.
  • Check for burnt-out bulb if oven light fails.
  • Check oven level and if bakeware/shelves are vibrating if oven fan is noisy.

Troubleshooting and error codes

Problem Checks to perform
Cooker does not work at all * Check wiring and wall switch.
* Check main cooker fuse.
* Check timer instructions.
Grill and hotplates work but oven does not * Check timer is set to manual operation (see page 12).
Oven temperature is too high or low * Check recommended temperatures (page 25) and adjust by ±10°C.
Hotplates and ovens work but grill does not * Check grill operation instructions.
* If cooling fan fails, grill may not operate correctly; call Service Force Centre.
Oven not cooking evenly or side opening door will not stay open * Check cooker is level.
Oven light fails to illuminate * Check cooker is not set for automatic cooking (light illuminates when cook time begins).
* Consider replacing light bulb (see page 31) if cooker is several months old.
Oven fan is noisy * Check oven is level.
* Check bakeware and shelves are not vibrating against the back panel.
